1879-CC S$1 MS65 NGC. The 1879-CC does not appear to have been released into circulation in significant numbers during the late 19th century. Many examples, however, were preserved in federal vaults at both the San Francisco Mint and the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. The former source seems to have dried up after a few bags were paid out in the early years of World War II. In the early 1950s, it was the turn of the Treasury Department. Such were the quantities paid out that the '79-CC was generally available on the numismatic market through the end of that decade. We do note, however, that this issue has always been more difficult to locate than virtually all other Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint. Today, the '79-CC is widely recognized as the rarest CC-mint Silver Dollar of the 1878-1885 era. While we frequently offer Mint State examples in grades up to and including MS64, this is only the fourth MS65 representative that we have handled this year. The luster is full, frosty, and swirling with lovely cartwheel visual effects. There is some modest brightness in the fields, and bold striking definition is noted throughout. Virtually untoned with typically few distractions for the assigned grade. Population: 23 in 65, none are finer at NGC (7/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
