Many examples, however, were preserved at both the San Francisco Mint and the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. The former source seems to have dried up after a few bags were paid out in the early years of World War II. Quantities paid out through the Treasury Department in the early 1950s were such that the '79-CC was generally available on the numismatic market through the end of that decade. Today, the '79-CC is widely recognized as the rarest CC-mint silver dollar of the 1878-1885 era. It has always been more difficult to locate than virtually all other Morgan dollars from the Carson City Mint.
The near-Gem offered in this lot features sharply impressed design elements, save for some minor softness on the definition in Liberty's hair strands and in the eagle's breast feathers. The surfaces are virtually white and possess vibrant luster. A few minute marks on Liberty's cheek limit the grade.
From The Chicago-Ark Collection.
