1879-CC<S$1> MS62 PCGS. David Bowers (1993) writes that railroad tariffs actually made it cheaper for Nevada mines to ship silver bullion hundreds of miles to San Francisco for coinage than to send it 15 miles to the Carson City Mint. As a result, silver bullion was scarce at Carson City, and the mint stopped production of dollars after only a relatively few had been coined. Coinage operations were suspended for a period of six months at the facility. The 1879-CC has, therefore, always been more difficult to locate than virtually all other Morgan dollars from the Carson City mint. Today, the '79-CC is widely recognized as the rarest CC-mint silver dollar of the 1878-1885 era. The bright lustrous surfaces of this specimen are essentially untoned. The design features are adequately struck, though the hair over Liberty's ear is weak. The reverse is well preserved, but the obverse reveals a few small contact marks on Liberty's cheek and neck, and minor luster grazes in the fields.
