1879-CC S$1 Capped Die MS64 Prooflike PCGS.
1879-CC S$1 Capped Die MS64 Prooflike PCGS. VAM-3. Top 100 Variety. A splendid cameo near-Gem with frosty devices and impressively mirrored fields. Wisps of tobacco-brown patina occasionally visit the generally untoned surfaces. The obverse center has faint roller marks, as made, but the strike is otherwise sharp. The cheek is clean for the grade, and the reverse is well preserved. For many years, the 'Capped Die' reverse was considered unsightly, and was spurned by collectors. In more recent years it was determined that the mintmark is strongly repunched, and exhibits a medium CC over a smaller CC mintmark. The variety is also scarcer than its 'Clear CC' counterpart, and the day may soon arrive when it carries a substantial premium. Of course, the 1879-CC is the toughest Morgan Dollar from the pre-1889 era of the Carson City Mint, and unlike the low mintage 1881-CC and 1885-CC Dollars, the issue did not show up in vast quantities in the GSA hoard. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder.
