1879-CC $5 AU50 PCGS. Although half eagles were the "little sisters" of gold coinage throughout much of U.S. numismatic history, generally produced in much smaller quantities than their larger siblings, in 1879 Carson City managed to manufacture a respectable amount of five dollar pieces, 17,281, making it the third-largest mintage of the 1870s and a larger emission than the eagles and double eagles combined. This example offers only a passable strike, but there are no singular abrasions and the surfaces, with mellow orange-gold coloration, show considerable luster remaining and lots of eye appeal. A couple of tiny, undistracting planchet laminations near star 13. Population: 11 in 50, 33 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
