1879-CC $5 AU50 NGC. The 1879-CC seems to have been produced in much the same manner as the 1878-CC, since both issues typically display softness of strike in the centers. The present example, on the other hand, is crisply detailed on the obverse despite a little light rub. The eagle's neck feathers on the reverse, however, are not complete, but the balance of that side is appreciably bold. The surfaces retain ample evidence of a warmly frosted finish. The richly colored, orange-gold features display no more than the expected number of small and moderate abrasions for a frontier era gold coin that saw 10 points of wear. The 1879-CC Half Eagle is an immensely popular issue because its original mintage of 1,762 pieces is the lowest of any gold coin from the Carson City Mint. Perhaps 40-50 coins are extant, only 8-10 pieces of which grade AU (per Winter and Halperin, 2001). It is the rarest CC-mint Half Eagle after the first-year 1870-CC.
