1879-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. The 1879-CC (10,708 pieces produced) is similar in overall rarity to the 1878-CC. In high grades (AU-Mint State), however, the rarity edge goes to the 1879-CC with 62-81 pieces believed extant in AU and a mere 3-4 coins in Mint State (per Winter and Halperin, 2001). Modest hints of brightness are seen in the fields at direct angles, but the outward appearance is one of rich green-gold and orange-copper colors. There are no areas of bothersome incompleteness of strike, nor can we find any singularly mentionable abrasions. A pair of rust pits (as struck) below the first and final digits in the date are diagnostic of this issue. We offered two 1879-CC Double Eagles in AU58 during 2002: 1. Ex: FUN Signature Sale--The Eagle Collection (Heritage, 1/2002), lot 4081, where it realized $8,338. An NGC coin. 2. Ex: Long Beach Bullet Auction (Heritage, 6/2002), lot 1787, where it realized $10,925. Certified by PCGS.From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
