1879-CC $20 AU55 NGC. The 10,708-piece 1879 Carson City double eagle mintage is the fourth lowest from that mint. Examples are most often seen in the Very Fine to lower About Uncirculated grade range. High end AU and Uncirculated examples are rare. Douglas Winter, in his 2001 Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint writes that a hoard of XF and AU coins entered the market in the early to mid 1990s.
This Choice AU example displays bright yellow-gold surfaces that have retained a good amount of luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are sharp, having been well struck, a characteristic of this issue. Fortunately, this piece does not embrace another characteristic typical for the issue--excessive abrasions resulting from "rough handling and hard circulation" (Winter, 2001). The few small marks scattered about from light circulation are certainly not excessive or severe. A pleasing AU55 overall.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
