<B>1879-CC $20 AU53 PCGS.</B></I> We are fortunate in this auction to be able to feature multiple examples of the 1879-CC double eagle, a better date among Type Three Carson City twenties. Mint State pieces are quite rare, with only 15 coins having been certified in such lofty grades by the combined major grading services (11/06), so most collectors searching for a quality example of this date are forced to look for an AU piece with eye appeal. This coin more than fills the bill in that regard, with a good deal of luster remaining in the recessed areas of the lettering and devices, and only a minimum of wear, most notably on the highpoints of the crown and hair.
