1879-CC<$20> AU53 PCGS. In 1879, the mintage of double eagles shrank again, with just 10,708 coins produced. This production was a result of decreasing gold deposits as more of the yellow metal went to San Francisco. The West Coast facility moved to a larger building in 1874, and were now capable of producing substantial quantities of coinage every day. Despite the low mintage, collectors can be reassured that it will not be an impossible task locating an example. The survival rate was quite high, and a small hoard of examples entered the numismatic marketplace in the early 1990s. While examples are routinely available in the marketplace, the fastidious collector will find the going a bit rough. Nearly all examples that have survived have heavy abrasions or other flaws. This example is an exception, despite faint hairlines on each side. Although lightly abraded, a few thin scratches on the obverse field are the only problems of any significance. The surfaces have subdued yellow-gold luster with a trace of pink toning. This is a pleasing and appealing example.
From The Wyoming Collection.
