1879-CC $10 AU58 NGC. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Simply put, this is a rare coin. The Carson City Mint's delivery of Eagles in 1879 amounted to a mere 1,762 pieces, the lowest yearly output for not only this particular type, but for all gold coins produced at this branch mint. Surprisingly, the '79-CC is not the rarest Carson City Mint Ten. That honor belongs to the 1870-CC with just 35-45 coins believed extant. The 1879-CC comes in second place with only 40-50 coins known (per Winter and Halperin, 2001). Perhaps needless to say, this date is not common in any grade. However, most survivors are concentrated at or around the VF level of preservation. Winter and Halperin (Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, 2001) list 14 About Uncirculated survivors in their Condition Census. Curiously, the present example is not specifically mentioned in that group, but it should definitely be included. Another AU58 NGC coin is mentioned, and that piece realized $30,800 as lot 621 in Stack's March 1995 sale of the James A. Stack Collection. To date, there are no 1879-CC Eagles certified Mint State by NGC or PCGS (10/02), and none are rumored to exist. Fully prooflike in finish, this golden-rose survivor displays very little in terms of wear. The sharp definition benefits further from an above average strike: while at least one extant '79-CC Eagle exhibits excessive softness of detail in the centers, this coin displays ample evidence of a powerful impression throughout. The surfaces are noticeably scuffy from a short stint in circulation, but the only worthwhile pedigree markers are a pair of reverse reeding marks: the first is seen at the CA in AMERICA, while the second is in the field after and below those letters. The diagnostic Mint-made die scratch on the obverse through the BER in LIBERTY is evident under a loupe. We also note that the lower loop of the 9 in the date is filled, as is the first C in the CC mintmark.
