1879-CC $10 AU50 PCGS. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. The 1879-CC is currently unknown in Mint State, and with good reason. The paltry original mintage of 1,762 pieces is the lowest among all gold coins produced at the Carson City Mint. The most recent estimate on the number of survivors is provided by Doug Winter and James Halperin in the 2001 book Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint. They assert that 40-50 pieces are extant, only 8-10 coins of which grade AU. Although not the best produced CC-mint Eagle, the 1879-CC generally displays an overall bold impression. This is a well defined coin with uncommonly sharp detail over the reverse eagle and the obverse hair curls. All other features are crisp, and the otherwise orange-gold surfaces reveal more deeply set green-gold shades at indirect angles. The scattered abrasions are consistent with a CC-mint gold coin that saw 10 points of wear, and relatively few are moderate in size. We know of the following 1879-CC Eagles that have been graded AU50 by either NGC or PCGS, each of which qualifies for low end Condition Census standing: 1. Ex: 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/99), lot 8129. 2. Ex: November 2000 Santa Clara Signature Sale (Heritage, 11/2000), lot 7196; 2001 FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/01), lot 8287. A PCGS-certified survivor. 3. Ex: 2001 Atlanta ANA Signature Sale--The Genaitis Collection of 1879 Coinage (Heritage, 8/01), lot 7909. Another NGC example. 4. The present PCGS coin, which is distinct from the three preceding and identifiable by a staccato-like abrasion on the obverse portrait below Liberty's eye.
