1879-CC $1 MS65 PCGS. While the 1879-CC Morgan dollar issue was represented in the GSA hoard, the proportion of survivors from that source is much smaller than for other, later issues. As recounted in his A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Q. David Bowers comments on the issue: "Among basic date and mintmark issues, the 1879-CC is the first key or rare variety in the Morgan dollar series and is the second rarest (after 1889-CC) of all Carson City Morgans. ... There were probably hundreds of thousands of 1879-CC dollars melted under the 1918 Pittman Act, but facts will never be known."
By contrast, the incredible eye appeal of this Gem exemplar is an undeniable truth. Though the hair over the ear shows softness, the remainder of the piece is well-defined, and delicate, hazy silver-gray luster graces amply lustrous fields. A gorgeous survivor from an issue that is essentially unavailable any finer; PCGS has certified only two such pieces (1/08).
From The Oxford Collection.

Coin Engraver: George T.
