1879 50C Morgan Half Dollar, Judd-1601, Pollock-1796, High R.6, PR67 NGC. The obverse of this pattern issue is essentially a reduction of the obverse from Morgan silver dollars. The reverse is different with a stylized eagle, and lettering arranged in a different manner than that of the regular Morgan dollars. Andrew Pollock listed this variety as Rarity-6 in his pattern reference, and more recently Dave Bowers revised the rarity rating upward to High Rarity-6 in his update of the Judd book. At USPatterns.com it is suggested that over a dozen are known, although it may actually be a Rarity-7 variety. We are certain that this example has claims to finest known, and we cannot imagine any that are more attractive. Although somewhat weakly struck at the centers, it has gorgeous original heather and blue color with underlying mirrored surfaces. Neither PCGS or NGC have graded any finer examples of this issue. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (1/05). Lot:9867
