1879<$4> Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3--Scratched, Cleaned--ANACS. Net PR55. The attribution, as well as the striking characteristics, identify this coin as one of the 1879 Flowing Hair Stellas struck in standard gold alloy early in 1880. The otherwise sharp definition wanes a little in the centers, particularly on the obverse, and one can even see some Mint-made striations in these areas. Despite some mishandling, the surfaces retain much of the original proof finish. The fields are appreciably reflective and the devices are suitably frosted in finish. The interplay between this reflectivity and frosted texture provide a relatively pleasing cameo effect that is more-or-less evident depending upon the light angle. Both sides exhibit green-gold coloration with scattered hairlines from a cleaning. A few moderate distractions are noted on the obverse around Liberty's neckline and before the brow, and there is a reverse pinscratch from the left border.
We are pleased to be offering more than one representative of the fabled Flowing Hair Stella in this sale. While the present specimen is not perfect, it does offer plenty of crisp striking definition, much of the original finish, and pleasing coloration for a more modest sum. A respectable candidate for inclusion in a gold type set.
From the Virgil Farstad Collection, Part Two.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
