<B>1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3 PR64 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The planchet striations on this piece are nearly vertical, and faintly visible on the highest design points. They also extend into the fields above and below, although this is barely detectable without a magnifier. We always try to mention the planchet striations as they represent an important aspect of production for these pieces. They are also highly useful for pedigree research. A substantial number of stellas still exist today, in a wide range of grades. As the direction or orientation of the planchet striations is a random matter, pedigree researchers realize that two offerings cannot be the same specimen if the striations are running in different directions.<BR> Technically, the gold stellas are pattern issues with limited mintages, although it is now believed that there may have been as many as 800 or even 1,000 of these "patterns," including a number of restrikes made a few years later. For many years, the mintage figure was quoted at just 400 pieces, however, it is known that restrikes were produced, thus the higher figures. It may be the case that nearly 400 of these still survive today in various grades, many impaired.<BR> This lovely proof has rich greenish yellow-gold color with deeply mirrored fields and fully lustrous devices. A thin hairline crosses Liberty's cheek vertically, nearly parallel to the planchet striations, and this undoubtedly accounts for the limited grade of this piece. A hint of rose iridescence is visible above the date with a small patch of hazy blue color behind the hair curls. The upper reverse also has some hazy patina.
