1879<$4> Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1832, 1833, R.3, PR62 NGC. The Four Dollar Gold Piece, or Stella, is a curious coin that was proposed by John Kasson as an international coin whose value would be roughly equivalent to that of an Austrian 8 Florin. The coin was designed by Charles Barber in 1879 after a design his father, William, had executed in the previous year. That same year 15 pieces were struck as patterns (Judd-1635) and then widely distributed around Washington circles to popularize the proposed new denomination, but were soon forgotten when the international gold coin was rejected by Congress.
This is one of the 400 restrikes from 1880 as seen by the roller marks in the center of the obverse and reverse, and pronounced weakness on Liberty's central hair detail. The fields are moderately reflective and a number of small abrasions and hairlines in the fields serve to limit the grade. Still, a very popular offering to the advanced gold collector.
