1879 $3 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Although Walter Breen estimated a total population of 15 to 18 coins, although our research suggests a population that is in the range of 10 to 12 coins, and pieces infrequently appear for sale at auction. Two pieces are part of museum holdings, with one example at the Smithsonian Institution and the other retained by the Harry Bass Foundation and on display at the ANA museum in Colorado.
At least two others were acquired by their owners directly from the Philadelphia Mint in the year of issue, including the Garrett and Childs Collection coins. Among the remaining pieces, a few are impaired and possibly two others are similar to this Gem, representing the finest available quality for this issue.
This impressive Gem proof has exceptional aesthetic appeal created by deeply mirrored fields and brilliant yellow-gold devices that retain their full quota of mint frost. A prominent lint mark diagonally through the A of DOLLARS will serve as an excellent pedigree marker. Traces of light die rust can be seen on the devices, a die characteristic that Breen attributed to the first delivery of proofs on January 25, 1879. The existence of these die rust marks confirm the proof status of this example, not that it was in question.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
