1879 $3 PR63 Cameo PCGS. The Guide Book reports a proof mintage of just 30 pieces for the 1879. This figure is much smaller than, for example, the 1888 three dollar piece, which had a proof emission of 291 pieces. The proof 1879 is sufficiently rare that it is necessary to develop diagnostics to differentiate it from the merely scarce business strikes, of which 1,000 pieces were coined. Proofs have an unfinished field within the 8 and 9 in the date, while business strikes have a clear date. The present piece is from proof dies, although the flashy fields and nicely frosted devices are clearly of proof origin. An apparently unreported proof diagnostic is a nearly vertical die line beneath the eye, seen on this intricately struck and carefully preserved specimen. Purchased in the 1930's by Karl Stecher Sr., perhaps at face value from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. A hobby envelope marked "1879 3.00 proof" is included. Population: 2 in 63 Cameo, 2 finer (1/07).
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
