1879 $3 MS64 PCGS. A near-Gem survivor from a minuscule mintage of only 3,000 coins. Garrett-Guth (2006) explain in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins that "collectors and dealers were responsible for preserving a high percentage of the mintage, and mini-hoards were dispersed slowly throughout the first half of the 20th century." The pleasantly clean fields and bold strike of this piece are of the quality typically seen on coins of a higher grade.

Coin Engraver: James B.
