<B>1879 $3 MS64 PCGS.</B></I> Unlike its 1878 predecessor, the 1879 is a low mintage date. Only 3,000 pieces were struck, and although a few hundred Mint State examples are known, only a small portion of these can compete with the quality of the present lustrous near-Gem. The orange and ice-blue toning is original, and the strike is precise throughout. Intense evaluation beneath a strong lens reveals only unimportant field grazes. The 1879 trades for a bit more than a "common" three dollar gold piece, but since it is many times scarcer than the 1878, one can argue that the 1879 remains underappreciated.
