1879 $3 MS64 PCGS. In 1878, the Treasury made a final attempt to circulate the three dollar denomination. 82,304 pieces were struck, which was low by the standards of S-mint double eagles, but was high by the measure of the three dollar series. After 1878, commercial mintages of the denomination never exceeded 6,000 pieces. The 1879 has a typically low production of 3,000 pieces. This meticulously struck and lustrous near-Gem has delightfully smooth surfaces, especially on the central reverse, which is nearly immaculate. Because the three dollar denomination is a costly type, better dates within the series carry a relatively low premium over type, and provide better value relative to the "common" dates.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
