1879 $3 MS64 PCGS. After a high (for the series) mintage of 82,324 pieces, Three Dollar gold production at the Philadelphia Mint fell to just 3,030 pieces in 1879. A prooflike, Choice quality survivor of the business strike delivery, the present example may trace its pedigree to a hoard assembled by John Beck. The shimmering fields and frosty textured devices exhibit evenly distributed reddish-gold coloration. There are a few stray abrasions, but none are out of context with the assigned grade. Sharply struck, as one would expect for a low mintage U.S. gold issue, and possessed of captivating eye appeal. Despite a limited original mintage, the 1879 was preserved in significant enough numbers to make high grade survivors among the most plentiful in the Three Dollar gold series. A strong candidate for inclusion in an advanced type set. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
