<B>1879 $3 MS64 NGC.</B></I> With a mintage of just 3,000 business strikes, the immediate temptation is to call this piece a major rarity, yet a large number of higher grade coins still exist. Garrett and Guth noted: "Collectors and dealers were responsible for preserving a high percentage of the mintage, and mini-hoards were dispersed slowly throughout the first half of the 20th century. The typical Mint State specimen is prooflike and falls in the MS-63 and MS-64 range, with Gems becoming very scarce." This lovely honey-gold piece is at the high end of the range of typical pieces, with reflective fields that show the often-seen mixture of cartwheel luster.
