<B>1879 $3 MS64 NGC.</B></I> David Bowers and Douglas Winter, in their book <I>United States Three Dollar Gold Pieces,</B></I> wrote: "As coins of this date did not circulate in commerce, the relatively few AU pieces probably represent souvenirs that were not carefully kept. They are rarer than Mint State pieces but are less desirable numismatically." The more ready obtainability of the MS64 specimen in this lot is offset by its vibrant luster and gorgeous greenish-gold patina. Sharply executed design elements complement these attributes, as does the cameo-like effect that arises when the coin is rotated under a light source. Scattered handling marks, especially on Liberty's cheek and in the left obverse field, preclude an even higher grade. Overall, an appealing Mint State three dollar specimen.
