1879<25C> Washlady Quarter Dollar, Judd-1596, Pollock-1786, R.8, PR63 PCGS. Barber's popular "Washlady" design. The head of Liberty faces left with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above and 1879 below. She is wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY. The headband is ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves, and bolls. There are 13 stars at the border arranged 7 left and 6 right. Normally paired with an upright eagle that is larger than the adopted design for the quarter, here is a unique specimen, struck in white metal, that is combined with the regular dies with motto reverse. The obverse is bright and noticeably striated while the more subdued reverse can be recognized by a planchet flaw on the border at 5 o'clock. According to the USPatterns.com website, this piece has traded privately several times over the past century, most famously being owned by Waldo Newcomer, and exhibited at the ANS by noted pattern expert William H. Woodin in 1914, and later owned by Major Lenox Lohr and offered for sale in 1960-61 for $475, but it has not been offered at public auction since the 19th century.
Ex: Doughty Collection (New York Coin & Stamp 4/1891) lot 463; Woodside Collection (New York Coin & Stamp 4/1892) lot 368.
