1879 25C Washlady Quarter Dollar, Judd-1590,
1879 25C Washlady Quarter Dollar, Judd-1590, Pollock-1783, High R.6, PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. The Washlady obverse design by Charles Barber. The reverse has an eagle clutching an olive branch and three arrows. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend and E PLURIBUS UNUM motto follow inside the upper reverse border with the denomination expressed as QUAR. DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. While today the Washlady design is one of the most desirable in the entire pattern series, at the time of issue it was not well received. Liberty's hair was perceived as "disheveled." The Washlady name dates to the April 1891 Doughty Collection, held by New York Coin and Stamp, and David Proskey is generally given credit for the name. Also known in copper and listed in white metal. The white metal piece is from the listing in Farouk, but this piece is untraced today. However, since the half dollar and dollar are known in white metal, it is logical to assume the quarter also exists in this composition.
This is a sensational Gem proof with highly lustrous devices and deeply mirrored fields, and it is one of the most stunning patterns offered in this auction. The contrast between the fields and devices is profound and renders a stark white-on-black contrast. Light roller marks across Liberty's portrait are left over from the planchet preparation process before this coin was struck, and have no bearing on the grade. A touch of gold toning on the devices and at the borders completes the picture of near perfection.
Ex: Genaitis Collection (Heritage, 8/2001), lot 8392.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
