1879<$20> PR64 Cameo PCGS. Only 30 Proof double eagles were coined in 1879, and few of those survive today. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen suggested that only eight to 10 proofs are known, while David Akers was a bit more conservative and suggested a survival of 10 or 11 coins. Currently, PCGS shows just four examples on the population report, the other three all certified as PR63. NGC shows a total of four examples as well, with grades of PR61 Cameo, PR63 Cameo, PR64 Cameo, and PR66 Cameo. If we assume that all of these examples represent different coins, a total of eight have been certified, aligned nicely with Walter Breen's earlier estimate.
Every gold denomination produced in 1879 included a proof mintage of just 30 coins. The smaller denominations have had a higher survival rate, and while not common, are not nearly as rare as the double eagles. To hold 20 dollars in the form of a single coin was not very practical in the late 1800s or early 1900s, and few collectors could actually afford to obtain and hold the double eagles. Even into the 1920s, these coins had virtually no resale value, and many collectors simply spent them when funds were needed.
This Choice proof example has deeply mirrored greenish gold fields with brilliant and lustrous yellow-gold devices. Every individual detail is superbly defined. The fields have a wavy or watery appearance that is consistent with all gold proofs of this era. This is the single finest example certified by PCGS, and probably qualifies as the second or third finest known proof 1879 double eagle.
From The Greenwich Collection, Part Two.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
