<B>1879 $20 MS63 <img border='0' src='http://www.heritagecoins.com/images/star.gif' width=10 height=10> NGC.</B></I> Philadelphia Mint double eagle production amounted to 207,630 pieces in 1879. Winter (2002) suggests that, because few examples grade below the AU53 level, the '79-P did not see widespread circulation. This may be true, but most of those coins that were preserved were carelessly handled, as the issue is also a prime rarity in Mint State grades above MS61. Fully prooflike with glowing, orange-gold features, the present example is a delight to behold. Apparently NGC agreed, as it gave this piece its Star designation. Pinpoint striking definition is noted throughout, and only a few scattered obverse abrasions seem to rule out an even higher Choice designation. We are aware of only three 1879 double eagles certified MS63 that have appeared at auction in recent years, all of which qualify for Condition Census standing:<BR><BR> 1. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 914, where it realized $9,488; Santa Clara Signature Sale (Heritage, 11/2002), lot 7823, where it realized $13,800. PCGS-certified.<BR><BR> 2. Ex: FUN Signature Sale--The "Eagle Collection" of Liberty Double Eagles (Heritage, 1/2002), lot 4080, where it realized $9,488. Certified by NGC.<BR><BR> 3.
