1879 $2 1/2 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. Only 12 to 15 proof quarter eagles exist, including a couple of Gem pieces. It is certainly rarer than the proof-only 1863 quarter eagle, and also seen less frequently than the highly regarded 1875 proof quarter eagle issue. The finest known specimen appears to be the Superb Gem Eliasberg specimen, followed by a couple Gem PR65 coins. At least two examples are held by museums, one in the Smithsonian and another in the Western Heritage Museum.
Myriad planchet flakes on the obverse and wispy hairlines on each side have prevented a Gem grade assignment for this desirable piece. Both sides have intense yellow mint frost on the devices, surrounded by deeply mirrored fields. The contrast on this piece is deeper than usually seen, although most known examples have some degree of a cameo appearance.
This piece is different than the Eliasberg coin, and is not the Bass, Garrett, or Trompeter example. An interesting feature of this coin is the rotated reverse die, turned about 30 degrees counterclockwise in relation to the obverse. We do not know if all proofs have a similar alignment, although it is not frequently mentioned in the literature. The reverse has a tiny point from the wire edge, on the border over the left serif of R in AMERICA.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
