1879 10C PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. One of the effects of reinstating specie payments and returning silver to active circulation in the mid to late 1870s was the sudden return of massive quantities of U.S. coins to the country. These silver coins had been exported after specie payments were suspended early in the Civil War. Since the Mint had its hands full distributing these coins, as well as churning out vast quantities of the new Morgan Dollar, Seated Dime production was fewer 50,000 coins each year from 1879-1881. Furthermore, no coins of this denomination were struck at the branch mints until the San Francisco facility returned to the fray in 1884. The 1879 was produced to the extent of just 14,000 business strikes and 1,100 proofs. While Dimes of this date are more common than these mintage figures might suggest, they are immensely popular among specialists. The proof delivery is also a noteworthy condition rarity in the highest grades, with just 12 PR67 examples reported at NGC and PCGS. There is a lone PR68 NGC specimen finer (10/02). Virtually untoned on the obverse, the present Superb Gem displays warm golden-gray reverse tinting. The finish is mostly brilliant, but we do note modest suggestions of mint frost over the devices. Expectantly smooth for the assigned grade. From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
