1879<$10> MS62 PCGS. Possible 1879/8. Breen-6993. This mysterious overdate has been known for decades, but never officially recognized. In part this is because of its extreme scarcity--only two Uncirculated pieces were known to Breen when he published his 1988 Encyclopedia. The diagnostics listed for B-6993 are: "Part of lower r. loop of 8 within loop of 9." (This is apparently a typo as it would be the lower left loop of the 8 that would show in the bottom of the 9). A strong magnifier will reward the viewer when examining this piece. There is definitely something in the lower loop of the 9 and it is closed on the left side, as the lower loop of an 8 would be. This underdigit, if we may call it that, is actually quite sharp, and we would speculate that this may be an early die state of this overdate.
The coin otherwise is a pleasing for the grade. The luster is a bit weak and the strike a little soft on the stars, but all in all a good coin for the grade with light, original, variegated coloration.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
