1879 $1 Washlady Silver Dollar, Judd-1604, Pollock-1799, Low R.7, PR67 Brown PCGS. Ex: H.W. Bass, Jr. William Barber's so-called "Washlady" design shows Liberty with elegantly coifed hair, wearing a band inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse features an upright eagle with raised wings and most of the statutory inscriptions are placed on that side. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Described in the Bass catalog as, "A breathtakingly beautiful Gem, a coin of dazzling appearance. Mint red and iridescent blue delicately blend over deep mirror surfaces.
The coin is an absolute visual delight!" We couldn't agree more. At USPatterns.com, the following commentary attests to the beauty of this design: "The 'Washlady' dollar in copper is considered today to be one of the most beautiful designs ever made by the U.S. Mint. At that time, however, the design was not well received as, apparently, Liberty's hair and the way it was tied back was considered to be disheveled." Although some other examples exist with more original mint color, this piece is numerically the finest of about 10 examples known.
Ex: Brinton T. Schorer (5/3/1973); Harry W.
