1879 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1617, Pollock-1813, R.4, PR61 PCGS. The goloid dollars were an attempt for the United States to join most of the rest of the world in use of the metric system, an attempt that, 128 years later, remains largely unsuccessful. Liberty wears a coronet with a border of pearls. The obverse Liberty Head is a William Barber design. The reverse shows a partial wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base, with a ribbon, and DEO EST GLORIA on a tablet above (is that tablet shaped like a dove descending?). Struck in silver (or the alleged goloid) with a reeded edge. The no-contrast proof surfaces show some faint hairlines and a small scrape through the neck, along with some field haze, but this remains an attractive example of this available pattern issue.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
