Up for auction is a very interesting coin. It is the Vam 33A, of the 1878-p 7/8tf. Now we have sold many vam 33 over the years. It is the coin with the wild doubled legs and the die gouge coming out of the eagles neck. It is the coin I call the “scratch off ticket” as it shares this reverse with the vam 44, the king of the vams. If the obverse has the tripled cotton bolls, you have a 4 figure coin in all grades. This example is the vam 33A as it does not have tripled cotton bolls, and it is the A, as it is the heavily clashed version of the vam 33. BUT...what makes this coin very interesting, is that the die gouge coming out of the eagle's throat, that is always obvious on this variety, seems to continue across the whole reverse, right through the In, from In God we trust and into the “s” in States. I have never seen this before, and I have probably held and examined over 100 examples of the vam 33. Wild coin! I am sure Vamworld and Leroy would love to see this coin!
