1878<T$1> PR66 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. The 1878 is the first proof-only issue in the Trade Dollar series, and it is also the last year in which the mint sold examples of this denomination as part of proof sets. In the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, Boston dealer Don Corrado Romano and New York dealer Max Mizel formed two hoards of proof 1878 Trade Dollars, both of which have since been dispersed. It is safe to assume the present specimen was not part of those accumulations, as most of Eliasberg's collection was assembled by Clapp much earlier. This coin is moderately patinated in dove-gray shades with irregular reddish-crimson and cobalt-blue accents at the denticles. Neither the needle sharp strike nor the carefully preserved surfaces are worthy of criticism. Census: 8 in 66, 4 finer (10/05).
From The Albert E. Willis Collection.
