1878-S S$1 MS67 PCGS.
1878-S S$1 MS67 PCGS.<p>Ex: NFL Set. We had the privilege to offer this coin when we auctioned NFL linebacker Gregg Bingham's Morgan Dollar collection as part of our January 2001 FUN Signature Sale. Now part of Mike Casper's PCGS Registry Set, we are sure that this coin will find its way into another collection of high grades Morgans. We quote from our January 2001 catalog description: "Despite its proximity to the Comstock Lode, the Carson City Mint was plagued by political opposition that prevented it from achieving its true potential in Morgan Dollar production. The beneficiary of this tension between Washington, D.C. and Carson City was the San Francisco Mint, which received sizeable shipments of Comstock silver starting in 1878. A high mintage (9.7 million pieces) delivery, the 1878-S is also one of the most common Morgan Dollars in Mint State. Nonetheless, the certified population of this issue drops off rapidly above the MS65 grade level... This coin displays a modest prooflike finish on the obverse, but the reverse is uniformly frosted. Both sides are equally free of grade-limiting abrasions. The strike is typically sharp for the issue and delicate apricot iridescence overlays both sides in a mottled fashion." NGC and PCGS combined have seen just 20 coins in MS67 with a lone MS68 PCGS specimen finer (10/01).From the Mike Casper Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
