1878-S<$20> MS63 PCGS. This issue has the 14th highest mintage of any Liberty Head double eagle, and yet it is non-existent in higher grades than the present example, according to PCGS population data. It is a classic condition rarity with nearly every known example in the circulated or lowest Mint State grades. Much of the mintage entered circulation and many others were exported for international trade purposes. Of those in the latter category that have been returned, nearly all are heavily bagmarked. The holdings of the Smithsonian Institution provide a glimpse into the high grade rarity of this date. The National Numismatic Collection has 16 examples of this date, yet only one is Mint State, and that coin is just MS60! This example is the first PCGS-certified MS63 1878-S double eagle that we have offered since the beginning of our auction archives in 1993. It is a sharply struck example with fully brilliant and frosty luster. Both sides have bright yellow-gold surfaces with a hint of rose color. Minor scuffs and abrasions can be seen in the fields, and these are strictly consistent with the grade. Population: 6 in 63, 0 finer (7/06).
