1878<S$1> Goloid Dollar, Judd-1562, Pollock-1753, High R.6, PR66 Brown NGC. Ex: Bass. The head of Liberty faces left on the obverse, with E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date below. She wears a cap inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters. There are 13 stars at the border. The inscription: GOLOID./1 GOLD./24 SILVER./.9 FINE./258 GRS. is within a circle of laurel leaves and berries. The legend is at the border, the denomination, ONE DOLLAR is below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. According to Pollock, this design only exists in goloid and copper, no silver impressions have been confirmed. The USPatterns.com website states: "This is the most polished design of the three goloid dollar patterns of this year." More than a dozen pieces are believed known today in copper. This piece is tied for second finest certified with a single PR66 Red coin, and both of these coins are bettered only by a single PR67 Red and Brown example. Deep teal and crimson patina overlays the basic brown coloration seen over each side. Deeply mirrored and essentially problem-free with smooth, unblemished surfaces.
