1878 S$1 Goloid Dollar, Judd-1558, Pollock-1750, Low R.7, PR63 Cameo PCGS. On this pattern dollar, the head of Liberty faces left with the date below, E PLURIBUS UNUM above, seven stars left and six right. The reverse has GOLOID, the composition, and weight in grains in the center, surrounded by a circle of 38 stars, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and ONE DOLLAR below at the periphery. Struck in standard silver alloy with a reeded edge. This is Barber's third goloid design for 1878. According to the USPatterns.com website examples are alleged to be struck in "Goloid J1557/P1749 and silver J1558/P1750 but, to my knowledge, this has never been confirmed by metallurgical analysis. About two dozen are known combined." In fact, this issue may be scarcer than the two dozen mentioned. The last example we offered was a Judd-1557 (struck in goloid) in March 2005, and the last Judd-1558 we have a record of was sold by Superior in January 1994. This is a brilliant coin that has deeply mirrored fields with a significant amount of mint frost over the devices. A few light contact marks explain the grade, but do little to diminish the overall eye appeal of this lovely pattern.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
