1878 S$1 Goloid Dollar, Judd-1557, Pollock-1749, Probable R.7, NCS Proof, Obverse Scratch. Liberty is featured on the obverse with E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the date below. On the reverse, a description of metallic composition is abbreviated and surrounded by a circle of 38 stars. The description reads: GOLOID./ 1--G. / 24--S. / .9 FINE./ 258 GRAMS. Around the wreath are the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. Struck in goloid alloy (3.6% gold, 86.4% silver, 10.0% copper) with a reeded edge. Of unknown rarity as the goloid composition has often been confused with silver strikings in the past, but this issue must be at least R.7. Contemporary accounts from 1878 report that only 13 goloid pieces were struck. The fields are deeply mirrored and show very few signs of cleaning; however, there are a cluster of short pinscratches in the obverse field in front of Liberty's eye, a couple more between the point of the bust and star 1, and a shallow one that covers almost the entire length of the bottom of the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Brilliant throughout. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
