1878 S$1 Dollar, Judd-1556A, Pollock-1744, R.8--Environmental Damage--NCS Proof. The head of Liberty is large and faces left with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top and the date below. Similar to the pattern Fifty Dollar gold pieces from 1877. The reverse has a spread winged eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM in Gothic lettering above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the top and ONE DOLLAR on the bottom rim. Struck in white metal with a reeded edge. For many years, this pattern was unknown. It only came to light following the publication of the Judd book. Pollock only lists this single example. The Judd book lists three pieces, but our guess is there is duplication in those three listings. This piece has the darker gray accents of color from oxidation (as always seen on white metal coins) with considerable underlying brilliance still in evidence. Extremely rare and a very important opportunity for the pattern specialist.Ex: Fairfield Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/77), lot 71. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
