<B>1878 G$1 MS67 <img border='0' src='http://www.heritagecoins.com/images/star.gif' width=10 height=10> NGC.</B></I> The U.S. Mint made a final attempt to circulate the gold dollar in 1873 and 1874. A total of more than 320,000 pieces were struck for those two dates, probably because East coast demand was expected in place of the Federal paper dollar, which then traded near par. After 1874, the gold dollar had only token mintages. For the 1878, just 3,000 pieces were struck. A number were saved, but few compare with present Superb Gem, which has seamless flashy fields and a penetrating strike. The filled final 8 in the date confirms a business origin, per Breen.
