1878-CC<T$1> MS63 PCGS. The Carson City Mint concentrated on Morgan silver dollars in 1878, virtually ignoring the production of trade dollars. As a result, examples of the latter coinage issue are scarcely seen today. Just 97,000 of these pieces were minted, and many may have been melted a short time later. The entire mintage was produced in January and February of that year. A few months later, in July 1878, records indicate that 44,148 trade dollars were melted at the Carson City Mint, and it is believed that most or all were pieces dated 1878. If that is true, the net mintage was less than 53,000 coins.
This piece is sharply struck with strong design features on both sides. The surfaces are fully lustrous with satiny texture visible beneath lilac-gold and pale blue toning on both sides. A few tiny abrasions are evident on each side, preventing a higher grade. Population: 5 in 63, 9 finer (9/06).
