1878-CC T$1 AU58 NGC. Slate-gray in color with abundant silvery luster across the stars, legends, and devices. A well struck and nicely preserved example that has bold details on the head, upper stars, and talons. An issue that is even more rare than the mintage of 97,000 pieces would suggest, since an unknown quantity were melted by the mint on July 19, 1878. The majority of survivors are in VF to XF grades, with Borderline Uncirculated specimens extremely elusive. Business strike production of Trade Dollars ended that year, the same year that the Morgan Dollar made its debut. While the Carson City Mint would never strike another Trade Dollar after 1878, proof mintage of the series continued in Philadelphia through 1885.
