1878-CC T$1 AU58 NGC. Breen-5824. Federal records indicate that 97,000 Trade Dollars were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1878. However, 44,148 undistributed Trade Dollars were melted on July 19 of that year. Given the rarity of the '78-CC in today's hobby, it is likely that most, if not all of the coins melted were of this issue. Since chopmarked examples are very few and even farther between, the '78-CC probably did not see widespread exportation. At the near-Mint level of preservation, the '78-CC is the rarest Trade Dollar. It retains this title in all grades up to and including the Choice BU level. This is an exceptionally attractive coin for the grade with hints of original luster in the more protected areas around the devices. Warm golden-gray patina blankets both sides with whispers of tan color here and there on the obverse. There is not a single noteworthy abrasion, although a trio of well concealed reverse spots is noted for accuracy. This variety is readily identifiable by minor repunching within the lower left loop of the first 8 in the date and the placement of the CC mintmark over the DO in DOLLAR.From the Andy Geosits Collection of Trade Dollars.
