1878-CC S$1 MS66 NGC. After the Trade Dollar pass
1878-CC<S$1> MS66 NGC. After the Trade Dollar passed into history, the Carson City Mint turned much of its attention to the new Morgan Dollar. The premier issue from this fabled frontier mint, the 1878-CC was produced to the extent of 2.2 million coins. This is a respectable total for a CC-mint issue of this type, but the '78-CC is not as common as one might assume. Nonetheless, enough coins survive in the lower Mint State grades to satisfy less discerning collectors. It is above the Gem threshold that the 1878-CC shows its true condition rarity. This is a simply beautiful coin whose essentially untoned surfaces shimmer with frosty luster. The strike is full in all areas, and the surfaces are as smooth as one should expect for the MS66 level. We anticipate significant bidder activity when this coin crosses the auction block. Population: 112 in 66, 4 finer (4/05).
