1878-CC$1> MS65 Prooflike PCGS. In his Red Book on Morgan dollars, Dave Bowers dug up an interesting commentary from the Carson City Morning Appeal from April 17, 1878 concerning the arrival of dies from the Philadelphia Mint. It indicates that the coins would be struck at the rate of 30,000 per day on the big Ajax press. In what must have been a critique of George Morgan's design, the commentary concluded: "Great disgust was expressed at the general appearance of the dies." That opinion has not endured since it was written, as evidenced by the thousands of collectors of this series over the past 100 years.
As one would expect from an 1878-CC, the striking details are complete on each side. Like the coin above, the surfaces are brilliant. The fields exhibit strong, mirrored reflectivity and the devices have an especially thick overlay of mint frost which provides the contrast seen on this Gem coin. An exceptionally pleasing dollar, both in terms of eye appeal and technical preservation.
