1878-CC<50C> MS65 PCGS. Under the provisions of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, the government was obligated to purchase between two and four million ounces of newly mined silver each month. This was the basis for the heavily produced Morgan dollar, which was primarily minted to turn all this silver into coin form. As a result, the focus of the mints turned to producing Morgan dollars, and it stayed there for the next 10+ years. In 1878, two major rarities were created in the half dollar series because of the diversion away from subsidiary coinage to the new dollars: the 1878-CC and the 1878-S. Both were low mintage issues, the Carson City coin only had 62,000 pieces struck, while the S-mint had even fewer with a mere 12,000 halves produced.
This is a well produced coin that appears to be from an earlier or intermediate state of the dies. The diagnostic die cracks, from stars 2-4, stars 8-13, and from the middle olive leaf toward the U in UNITED are all present but very weak. The striking details are crisp throughout and the surfaces display the usual thick, frosted mint luster that Carson City coins are known for. This mint luster is abundantly evident even through the rather thick layer of medium gray toning on the obverse that turns to emerald-green at the margin, and the moss-green and golden-gray toning seen on the reverse. An exceptional opportunity for the Carson City collector or the Seated half specialist, only four other Gems have been so graded by PCGS with none finer, while NGC has certified only one in MS65 with one other finer (5/05).
