1878-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2-B. This is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced die variety specialist. Michael Fuljenz and Doug Winter described certain characteristic die scratches on the obverse and reverse of nearly every known example. They stated: "The authors are aware of only one 1878-CC Double Eagle which does not show the mint-made die scratches on the obverse and the reverse ... It is probable that some others exist." This example does not show these usual die scratches, and is therefore an example of the recently-discovered, rare Variety 2-B. This variety shows a slightly different position for the date and the mintmark, compared to the more usual Variety 1-A. (The 2-B variety was apparently discovered as part of the cataloging process for the Harry W. Bass Collection, Part III, by Bowers and Merena/Lot Number 874.) It has honey-gold color on the obverse with lighter yellow devices. The reverse has a greenish coloration, and it has a light scratch from the U of UNITED across the eagle's head.

Coin Engraver: James B.
